What's the Purpose of Using a Makeup Primer?

Makeup primers have been in focus for quite some time. However, a good number of people do not understand the real purpose of the primer in makeup or how to use it. Many people who apply makeup don't even own a primer, and even many skip the step, thinking it’s not important. Just like every other product in makeup, primer too has a purpose.

What is the purpose of makeup primer?

It is very easy to make your makeup look 100% better. Makeup primers are available in gel, cream, or liquid formula, which, when smoothed over your skin, fill all the tiny creases, large pores, flaky patches, and bumpy textures. The primer helps in creating a smooth surface for your makeup like a concealer or foundation to glide over.

You can also think of it as a smoothed layer of fondant over a jagged cake or glaze done over a smudged manicure. Makeup primer blurs, hides, and evens out the skin texture. Your makeup won’t be competing with roughness and oil slicks. It adheres to the face for hours.

Types of Primer

Primers are mostly available in silky cream and gel form. They can also be found tinted or colorless. Primers are available for the face as well as the eyes. However, mostly face primers are available tinted to match the skin tone/color. This product will give your skin a smooth, flawless finish and make the makeup last. Face primers help in covering large and visible pores giving the skin a polished feel making the skin look toned.

How do you apply Primer?

The answer is just too simple to answer. You just have to smooth it over your skin before applying makeup. That is it. But, below are some of the best practices you can use while applying primer:

  1. Primer works better on freshly moisturized skin. So wait for at least five minutes after applying moisturizer to sink it in.
  2. Remember to use only a thin layer of primer or just a pea-size blob for your entire face. If you glob on too much, then your makeup can end up sliding around instead of melting into the skin.
  3. To “set” your primer, wait for a full 60 seconds after applying the concealer and foundation.
